The Raft Race

The Kemney to Inverurie raft race took place on Sunday and was a huge success! Thank you to all involved....Both rafts finished the race and everyone managed to stay afloat! The first boat finished in tenth place, out of thirty, which was an excellent result. The rain stayed off and a brilliant time was had by all. Alan said, "It was one of the best days of my life!" We will let you know later how much was raised for charity...Thank you to all once again. Banff Day Services entered two rafts, the course was approximatly 5 miles and took around 2hrs and some of the crew changed at half way. blog by andrew clark

To everyone that took part in the Banff Inclusion Project that culminated in the raft race I would like to pass on my congratulations and best wishes.

This was a tremendous achievement and it seems like only yesterday since the project started. In fact work began back in March when the two teams from Banff Day Services and Brighter Horizons came together. Everyone worked hard through the Easter holidays to build the rafts and then participated in testing them at Tarlair Pool. I was very relieved to see that none sank! The swimming pool sessions that followed provided everyone the chance to practice their swimming skills and test their water confidence. Its amazing how different it feels swimming in a bounancy aid than without. The project team went on to organise a charity car wash and raised with sponsorship over £1,100 for Cancer and Kidney Research. Throughout the project the energy and enthusiasm remained high and everyone enjoyed a day at Loch Park activity centre practising with the rafts and coordinating the rowing and paddling.

On the day of the raft race it was evident that the four and a half mile course was going to prove to be a real challenge with a combination of fast moving water and some very shallow areas with submerged rocks.

It took 2 hours and 9 minutes for the first raft to complete the course coming in 10th place and 2 hours and 13 minutes for the second raft finishing in 13th place.

The crews looked exhausted but elated and should quite rightly feel very proud of their sucess.
