Harry's News

In Harry's news this week, lots of countries in the U.N. and the world have asked and want the Syria President Assad to step down as leader of Syria because of the recent killing of innocent civillians in the country, who are protesting against government's regime and its leader. The U.N. has called the violence and the killing to stop in Syria and it is organising sanctions against Syria to stop the violence. Lots of Syrians are going over the border to Turkey and are now staying in Turkey to avoid the violence in their country.

In other news, lots of people are cleaning up the streets in London and other cities in Britain after last week's riots. A lot of the rioters have been arrested and have been taken to trial to face charges of damage and vandalism. The police have arrested at least 1000 people for damage and looting which has happened across Britain's cities. This is believe to have been started by the police shooting which shot and killed a man dead, but this is not believed by the government. A lot of people want the rioters to stop rioting and a lot of people are cleaning up the streets and shops which were set alight when the rioters struck. The government says this was all started by hooligans and criminals who want to destroy everything in the towns and cities across Britain.

Harry's News

In Harry's news this week, there has been an huge economic crisis in the world that has affected the markets and shares all over the world. The economic crisis started when America announced that it could not be able to pay its debts. The government and the opposition had to agree on an emergency plan to help America pay its debts to stop the country going into administration from debt. After a lot of debate they finally made a plan on how to pay their debts, but the worry of it has caused an economic crisis with the shares and the markets going lower down then ever before. A lot of people hope this crisis will not stay for long, but it will be a long recovery.

In other news, in Libya it is been reported that N.A.T.O has killed one of Colonel Gaddafi sons with an airstrike in Libya. N.A.T.O has been in Libya for 5 months to stop Colonel Gaddafi's army from killing citizens in Libya and to arrest Colonel Gaddafi.

ASSESSMENT APPOINTMENT SYSTEM NEEDS AN OVERHAUL - EILIDH WHITEFORD MP

This story was in this weeks Banffie and was an extended answer to one of the questions we asked last Thursday...

Regular readers of this column will know that in the past I've expressed concerns about severely ill and disabled people required to attend Work Capability Assessments in Aberdeen.
I have no problem with people going through a rigorous assessment process to establish whether or not they are eligible for support, but I don't think it's fair to expect those who have already been disnosed with debilitating conditions to make unnecessary long and distressing journeys just to tick bureaucratic boxes.
Recently I was contacted by a constituent with serious health promblems who travelled into Aberdeen to attend her appointment, only to be kept waiting for more than an hour and a half.
This was because ATOS healthcare, the company that carries out these assessments for the UK Government, has a policy of booking several people for the same appointment slot, in case some don't turn up.
My constituent was told she could come back another day - but having come all the way from Banff andBuchan, she chose to wait, rather then face having to make a difficult, painful journey again.
Alternatively, many people rely on family or friends taking time off work to drive them into the city if they have appointment of any sort.
Most of us expect to be seen at the appointed time, or shortly afterwards. And if not, we are entitled to an explanation.
I raised my corcerns with UK Government Ministers. I explained that journeys into Aberdeen could be arduous for people in more rural parts of Banff and Buchan, especially for those with disabilities, painful conditions, or who have incontinence issues.
I also pointed out that many people will be relying on family or friends to drive them, who may themselves have other work or family responsibilties and can't just hang about all day.
I am very pleased to say that eventually, after futher correspondence, my constituent has at last received an apology. The Government has also confirmed that arrangements for a taxi can be made for anyone called in for a Work Capability Assessment who would have to travel for more than 90 minutes by public transport, for whom that journey might be difficult.
This is an important victory.
As most of Banff and Buchan is more than 90 minutes from the ATOS assessment centre by public transport, I would urge any sick or disabled personwho thinks they might experience promblems getting there to ask for a taxi.
I suspect that will also create an incentive for ATOS to see people on time and treat them with the dignity we all deserve.
